The objective of the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies International Internships-Energy/Digital/Aerospace program is to promote the international mobility of doctoral students whose research is in an area related to energy, digital technologies and aerospace.



The objective of the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies International Internships-Energy/Digital/Aerospace program is to promote the international mobility of doctoral students whose research is in an area related to energy, digital technologies and aerospace.


Place of tenure

The studies funded by this scholarship must take place in a university of one of the following regions or states:

  • Bavaria, Germany
  • Georgia, USA
  • São Paulo, Brazil
  • Shandong, China
  • Upper Austria, Austria
  • Western Cape, South Africa

The funded studies must begin no later than March 31st 2017.


Eligibility conditions

Applicants must meet all of the eligibility requirements at the competition deadline.

Enrolment in a Québec educational institution

Applicants must be registered full-time in a doctoral program at a Québec university, in a field covered by the International Internships/Energy-Digital/Aerospace program.


For full-time students enrolled in a Québec university:

  • The applicant must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada or a foreign student who has a valid study permit for the province of Québec.


It should be noted that:

  • The scholarship cannot be used for qualifying studies.

Eligibility period

The student is eligible to receive scholarship instalments for a period of one year or until the end of his/her doctoral program or his/her stay at an eligible institution.

Duration of the funded studies

The funded studies must have a minimum duration of 6 months and a maximum of 12 months.

Start date of the funded studies

The funded studies must begin no later than March 31 of the year following the offer of financial support.


Submitting an application

Electronic application form (e-form)

Applicants must have a personal identification number (PIN) in order to fill out the application e-form.

The e-form is available on the FRQNT website. It must be completed and sent electronically by the competition deadline. Once completed, applicants can print a copy for their records.  

Forms may be completed in English or French. Applicants who submit the form in English must provide a French title for their project.

Required documents

Required documents must be submitted electronically in the attachment files provided for that purpose in the application e-form. Documents that are illegible or unclear will be rejected.

It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that the application includes all documents required for the application to be considered admissible.

The applicant must provide the following:

  • An official transcript (an unofficial electronic version will not be accepted) for all university studies, completed or not (certificate, degree, Bachelor's, Master's, PhD. etc). When equivalences are granted for courses taken at other institutions or in previous programs, transcripts for these courses must be enclosed with the file, including collegial transcripts. For transcripts from outside Canada or the United States, applicants must enclose a letter explaining the grading system used by the institution in question;
  • The FRQNT considers transcripts issued by the Registrar's Office to the applicants to be official transcripts. Opening the envelope to scan the transcripts will not render them unofficial for FRQNT purposes;
  • Permanent residents must provide a copy of their Record of Landing or permanent resident card;
  • Applicants who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada must provide:
    • a copy of their Québec study permit.
  • Canadian citizens born outside must provide a copy of proof of Canadian citizenship;
  • A photocopy of a valid Quebec medical insurance card or any other document which proves that the applicant is a resident of Québec within the meaning of the Québec Health Insurance Act;
  • Acknowledgements of receipt from the editor for all articles submitted and notices received from editors for articles accepted for publication (acknowledgements of receipt for articles already published will not be sent to the evaluation committee).
  • An invitation letter from the foreign host institution.

Only the e-forms for the 2016-2017 fiscal year and the other required documents will be accepted. No attached material or documents other than those required will be forwarded to the evaluation committee. Files cannot be updated after the deadline for applications.

The FRQNT reserves the right to verify the authenticity of any documents and information provided by contacting the organizations concerned.

Any document submitted in a language other than French or English must be accompanied by a certified translation.

Procedure for submitting required documents

Before the deadline for applications, applicants must submit all required documents in the appropriate attachment file on the application e-form. No reminder will be made and no files can be added after the competition deadline.

IMPORTANT: incomplete application files will not be accepted.


Evaluation of applications

Applications will be assessed based on the following criteria and weighting:




Excellence of university record

  • Cumulative average obtained;
  • Progression of studies;
  • Duration of studies;
  • Prizes and distinctions.

Aptitude for research and relevant research experience

  • Reason for the application and research interests;
  • Applicant's experience and achievements.


8 points

Scientific quality and interest of the research project and the socio-economic scope of the research project, if applicable

  • Clarity of the scientific objectives;
  • Relevance of the methodology for the objectives sought;
  • Originality of the project;
  • Contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the field concerned;
  • Compatibility of the proposed project with the supervisor's field of research.

Social implication, leadership and communication skills

  • Leadership skills;
  • Organization of conferences and meetings;
  • Nominations;
  • Volunteering;
  • Mentoring;
  • Experience as a supervisor;
  • Project management;
  • Committee chairmanship;

  • General presentation of the application.

Integrity of the evaluation process

Fonds board members are not involved in the scientific evaluation of funding applications, and at no time may researchers, students or institutional authorities make contact with the evaluation committee chairperson or members. The Fonds have the right to withdraw an application from competition if there is any attempt to lobby the committee or sway the evaluation process.

Every person recruited to sit on an evaluation committee must comply with standard confidentiality rules regarding the application files, committee makeup, deliberations and recommendations. The evaluation committee chairperson, members and outside experts are required to disclose any conflicts of interest and must sign a written statement in this regard.


Awarding of scholarships and announcement of results

Awarding of scholarships

Applications are evaluated and ranked on merit by the evaluation committees. For each committee or group, scholarships are offered in accordance with the available budget. When allocating its budget, the FRQNT reserves the right to change its scholarships in keeping with objectives chosen by the Board of Directors.

Announcement of results

FRQNT Board of Directors funding decisions are announced electronically. All applicants are informed of the competition results.

The decisions of the Board of Directors are final and cannot be appealed. There is no review process.

The applicant must accept or decline the scholarship within 10 days of receiving the scholarship notification by completing the electronic form in his/her "Scholarship Holder Account". After this deadline, applicants are deemed to have declined the scholarship.


False or misleading information

In accordance with the Act Respecting the Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur, de la Recherche, de la Science et de la Technologie (CQLR, c. M-15,1,0,1), any applicant who gives false or misleading information in view of obtaining or procuring financial support is guilty of an offence and liable to a fine. If found guilty, the individual is barred from receiving financial support for a period of five years, unless he/she is pardoned.

Where a legal person commits an offence, every director or representative of that legal person who was aware of the offence is deemed to be a party to the offence and is liable to a fine, unless he/she proves to the satisfaction of the court that he/she did not acquiesce to the commission of the offence.

The Fonds de recherche reserves the right to impose any sanction or supplementary measure deemed useful, and initiate legal proceedings to obtain reimbursement of fraudulently obtained amounts and a compensation for suffered damages.


Research ethics and conformity

All projects involving human subjects, biological materials, descriptive data from human subjects, animals or animal parts, products or tissues require the approval of the research ethics board of the principal applicant's institution (Common General Rules, Section 5.3). Furthermore, if applicable, researchers must report any environmental impacts of their research and employ reasonable efforts to minimize them. If the environmental impacts could have serious or significant consequences, researchers must obtain the required authorizations and permits before the start of the project.


Liability of the FRQNT

The FRQNT is not liable for any direct or indirect injury arising from the processing of any grant, scholarship or other funding application, and, without limiting the generality of the above, is not liable for any direct or indirect injury arising from unauthorized disclosure by the FRQNT of the information contained in applicants' files.

Act respecting access to documents held by public bodies and the protection of personal information

The FRQNT is subject to the Act respecting access to documents held by public bodies and the protection of personal information (R.S.Q., c. A-2.1).

Applicants can obtain information on access procedures, the protection of personal information and the rights of recourse stipulated in the Act by contacting the person responsible for the Act.
