Changes in the Industrial Innovation Scholarships Program

June 15th, 2015

Following the announce of the federal budget, the 2015 Economic Action Plan indicates that in future the Accelerate Program, managed by MITACS, will become the main Federal mechanism for financing graduate-level research and development internships focused on business related challenges. Therefore, Canada's Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT) announce that the latest industrial innovation scholarships will be granted by fall 2015. Note that for 2015-2016 fiscal year, FRQNT has a budget for financing 50 new scholarships.

These changes in BMP Innovation Scholarships Program lead to the following:

  • The deadline for transmitting to FRQNT a complete IIS scholarship application is August 31, 2015 at 4 PM. FRQNT and NSERC will accept applications for a scholarship beginning at the following sessions: summer and fall 2015 or winter 2016. These applications will be processed according to the rules actually in place;
  • For the analysis and approval of the IIS applications by FRQNT and NSERC, the priority will be given to the date of reception of the complete* applications only;
  • All previous financial commitments from NSERC and FRQNT with regards to the IIS scholarship program will be honored. Both organizations will continue to manage and pay the IIS scholarships already granted until they are completed. As a consequence, IIS fellows whose Masters or PhD will continue until 2016, 2017 or 2018 do not need to worry about negative financial consequences to their scholarship.

Details of the Accelerate Program, which eventually will incorporate long-term internships in research and industrial development for university graduates, will be known soon. Then, FRQNT will relay the information to the research community in the natural sciences, mathematical sciences and engineering in Québec.
