The scientific director of the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT), Maryse Lassonde, was pleased to present the 2018 Prix d'excellence FRQNT to Éric Tamigneaux, professor at Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles and researcher at Merinov. The prize was presented during the closing of the FRQNT Journée de la recherche that took place today in Québec City.

Éric Tamigneaux, who holds a PhD in biology from Université Laval, has been teaching aquaculture techniques at the Québec School of Fisheries and Aquaculture (EPAQ), part of Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles, for the past 18 years. He is also a researcher at Merinov, the Cégep's College centre for the transfer of technologies in the fisheries (CCTT) and, from 2012 to 2017, he held the NSERC Industrial Research Chair for Colleges in the Conversion of Marine Macroalgae.

The innovative and transdisciplinary research carried out by Éric Tamigneaux over the years has greatly contributed to the development of mariculture in Québec. A pioneer in marine macroalgae research, he has successfully adapted algaculture techniques to the species, climate and market found in Québec, thereby contributing to the emergence of a new industrial sector based on the commercialization of cultivated algae, and made up of businesses from Gaspésie, the Magdalen Islands and the Côte-Nord. Much of his research has been carried out in collaboration with ministry partners, including the Ministère de l'Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l'Alimentation.

Training others is an intrinsic part of the research professor's activities. College and university students, researchers and technicians alike have all benefitted from Dr. Tamigneaux's unique expertise on the harvesting, cultivation and transformation of macroalgae. The popularization of science and knowledge transfer are also important to Éric Tamigneaux, who writes about his research work in Pêche Impact magazine and on Algue Québec website.

Éric Tamigneaux is a member of Ressources Aquatiques Québec (RAQ) and the Institute of Nutrition and Functional Foods (INAF), two strategic clusters supported by the FRQNT, as well as the European network Phycomorph. In 2017, he was the recipient of the Prix ACFAS Denise-Barbeau, which recognizes outstanding research done by a Cégep professor.

"It is an immense honour and a great joy to receive this award, which is the recognition of long years of work. I would like to begin by thanking the jury for this award. I would also like to highlight the essential contribution of the brilliant team of teachers, students and researchers around me as well as the administration of Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles, whose support allowed me to divide my time between teaching and research. This recognition shows that Cégep-CCTT partnerships create an exceptionally stimulating work environment that enriches the work of both teachers and researchers alike."

"The entire college community of Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles is proud to see this prestigious award presented to one of our own. The Cégep supports the development of research because it believes in the synergy between the teaching and research sectors. Furthermore, by its very nature, this research is of direct benefit to the region's businesses, helping the Cégep to achieve its mission to support scientific, economic and cultural development of Gaspésie and the Magdalen Islands."

– Yves Galipeau, Director General, Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles

"The scientific work carried out in Québec's colleges deserves to be recognized and celebrated, as it generates significant technological, environmental and economic benefits. The Prix d'excellence FRQNT, which is awarded to a college researcher every three years, is a part of this recognition effort. I am extremely pleased to present this year's award to Éric Tamigneaux, an algaculture visionary, whose research is truly exceptional in more ways than one."
