Abstract

Current electronic chips require over 30 km of interconnections to transmit a range of signals between components, leading to major obstacles in terms of operating speed and heat generation. One solution is to use light to transfer information between components, but light signal manipulation remains challenging. The research conducted by Fabio Souza Barachati demonstrates that the use of light-matter quasiparticles at the surface of a semiconductor increases the capacity to manipulate light. In addition to its basic research component, the study sets out evidence of the application of the discovery to develop an optical logic gate.
