Award-winning publication: Aldehydes as alkyl carbanion equivalents for additions to carbonyl compounds

Published in: Nature Chemistry

Abstract

Dai Xijie and Haining Wang's discovery features a huge leap in the formation of C-C bonds via carbonyl addition reactions. C-C bond formation, a fundamentally important chemical operation for the construction of organic molecules, lies at the heart of organic chemistry. The ability of chemistry to access chiral alcohols with moderate stereocontrol provides tremendous long-term potential for efficient streamlining and diversifying enantioenriched lead compounds in pharmaceutical industry. Other practical features that trigger for a safer and greener industrial manufacturing processes include near-ambient reaction conditions, operational ease and environmentally benign byproducts.
