Award-winning publication: Dual starch–polyacrylamide polymer system for improved flocculation

Water quality is vital to human health. Used in wastewater treatment plants around the world, polyacrylamide helps improve contaminant aggregation but was also recently proven to releases particles that are potentially carcinogenic and harmful to marine ecosystems. Mathieu Lapointe's findings provide an alternative: a non-toxic biodegradable starch-based polymer that reduces the toxicological risk to humans by using three times less polyacrylamide without impacting the capacity to remove contaminants in the water treatment process.
